Since the late 1970’s and until today, YMCA teams are considered to be one of the top teams in the country. A mix of Jews and Arabs can be found at all levels of this program including the professional coaching staff, many of whom were themselves swimmers on the Y’s teams. Representatives of the Y’s teams can be found at the highest national levels representing both Israel and Palestine at international competitions (including Olympic level). In national championships cooperation between Jews, Arabs and new immigrants are most apparent especially on the relay teams. The team focuses on competitive activities at all levels in the greater Jerusalem area and the JIY team is also the basis for the regional league which gives swimmers the opportunity for highest level competition. In addition to the competitive aspect, the social component is equally important and strong. Through social events such as parties, training camps and trips, teams members from all backgrounds create a strong bond that lasts for years. Our swimmers are educated about the benefits of mutual respect for each person and the community. Tryouts take place Sunday Thursday 4:00 7:00 p.m. at the YMCA pool.
