Swimming

YMCA Swimming Pool
The program is divided into three sections: Lessons for children, lessons for adults and Swim Team.

Swim lessons are taught in the 5-stage method. This method was developed in the USA and is considered to be the best.

Children swimming lessonsChildren’s swim lessons (ages 5 – 12) – 16 lessons, twice a week – Monday and Wednesday, 3:30 – 5:00 p.m.. Each class is 30 minutes.

Adult Swim Lessons – 3 levels: Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced.
12 Lessons, 45 minutes each, twice a week.

Swim Team – A competitive program for ages 6 – 24 divided into six different groups. Emphasis on team spirit, fitness training, personal development and competitive swimming skills.

The YMCA team is one of the three top teams in the country competing at national and international levels.

The Jerusalem International YMCAs swim program was established in the 1930’s. Since the late 1970’s and until today, YMCA teams are considered to be one of the top teams in the country.

A mix of Jews and Arabs can be found at all levels of this program including the professional coaching staff, many of whom were themselves swimmers on the Y’s teams.

Representatives of the Y’s teams can be found at the highest national levels representing both Israel and Palestine at international competitions (including Olympic level).

In national championships cooperation between Jews, Arabs and new immigrants are most apparent especially on the relay teams. The team focuses on competitive activities at all levels in the greater Jerusalem area and the JIY team is also the basis for the regional league which gives swimmers the opportunity for highest level competition.

In addition to the competitive aspect, the social component is equally important and strong. Through social events such as parties, training camps and trips, teams members from all backgrounds create a strong bond that lasts for years. Our swimmers are educated about the benefits of mutual respect for each person and the community.

Tryouts take place Sunday – Thursday 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the YMCA pool. Those not at swim team level will be sent for lessons to improve their strokes.

Squash

Squash is being actively developed in Israel. The new sports center planned for the JIY will greatly assist in the growth of the sport and the involvement of the community.

Weekly training sessions for members and guests are being facilitated by a professional coach. These sessions focus on skills, fitness, rules and awareness of the importance of fitness and health.

Programs designed for school children are being planned in the near future.

Golden Age ClubGolden Age Club

Supplementary fitness activities are offered for pensioners in a warm and caring environment. Professional fitness trainers offer a special program of activities which include: Physical fitness classes, swimming twice a week, sports activities, lectures and trips.

Fitness Express
(Women and girls ages 14 and up)

Fitness Express is a 30-minute circuit workout with a trainer.
Members work on strength, aerobics and flexibility. It is fast, fun and safe!

Sundays – Thursday 12:30 – 17:00 (Last entry at 16:25)

Moderate Voices for Progress (MVP)

Moderate Voices for Progress (MVP) is a month-long program, based in the USA , on conflict resolution and co-existence for Jewish, Christian and Muslim young adults between the ages of 25 and 35.

The program is co-sponsored by the Jerusalem International YMCA, the YMCA of Greater Hartford, the National Conference for Community and Justice and the Hartford Seminary. In addition to learning about different perspectives on the Middle East, US policy in the region and communication skills workshops, the participants will have the opportunity to meet with and develop mentor relationships with local religious, business, political and civic leaders.

The Jerusalem YMCA selects local candidates from all walks of life to participate. Special emphasis is placed on choosing community leaders and people committed to continuing the dialogue around the issues raised and explored during their stay in Hartford.
