Back to the top Library and Reading Room A charming library and reading room offering a selection of novels in English, French and German, non-fiction texts in English and a selection of English, Hebrew and German periodicals and newspapers. The room, situated on the first floor, contains fine examples of original library furniture and its walls are decorated with delightful paintings and tapestries by the late Yossi Stern, a well-known Jerusalem artist and former member of the YMCA. Members may borrow books or use the reading room for their own quiet study. Opening hours: Monday Friday 9:00 13:00. Back to the top Sports Center The current sports facilities were state-of-the-art in 1933. The YMCA swimming pool was the first of its kind in Jerusalem where most of the city’s youngsters learned to swim. Until 1991 the sports stadium was the only soccer stadium in the city where national and international games were played to packed terraces. Facilities have been upgraded in recent years and include: • Health and Fitness Center - contains a variety of new machines for running, cycling and weightlifting. A professional coach is on hand to give advice at all times. Open from 6:00 21:00 Monday Thursday, with shorter hours on Friday and Saturday. Schedule • Two squash courts are available to members and non-members from 7:30 21:00. Members may book courts from 9:00 on the day. • Swimming Pool open from 6:00 until late evening on most days. Separate hours available for men and women. Family swim on Fridays.Swimming Pool Schedule - Adults • Basketball Court when not being used for fitness classes and basketball team practices, the court is available for free play. • Saunas separate dry saunas for men and women A new, state-of-the-art sport and fitness center is currently being built in our backyard. It will be equipped with a wide range of top-flight facilities offering activities for different age and fitness levels. A 25-meter long, 8-lane swimming pool is planned in addition to a full-sized gymnasium, squash courts, Jacuzzi, wellness center and other exercise rooms. Its educational philosophy is child-centered, emphasizing flexibility and individual freedom of choice, self-experience and self-expression. The teachers respect each child’s needs and individuality, encouraging creativity. More than 130 children learn at the Preschool. Located as it is within the premises of the YMCA, it has the advantage of easy access to unique facilities, such as the indoor swimming pool and other sports areas, and enjoys the special environment of dignity and respect for all which permeates the entire institution and creates an atmosphere of peace.The Preschool aims: • To provide a high-quality pre-school education which stimulates children intellectually, emotionally, socially and physically, in the tradition of the YMCA ideals of balanced spirit, mind and body. • To facilitate coexistence between Arabs and Jews on a daily, ongoing basis as a normal part of life for children and their families. • Expose the children to other cultures, languages and religions, enabling the development of tolerance and understanding, while preserving the uniqueness of each child and its community.Preschool Staff: The Preschool is directed by Adena Levin who, together with a qualified staff of teachers, assistants, maintenance and security personnel, take care of the children’s needs. All operational and educational decisions are made by the administration and staff of the pre-school. Regular staff meetings and training take place throughout the year. Structure and Organization of the Preschool: The Preschool consists of six classes with a minimum of two teachers per class. In some classes the opportunity is provided for both Jewish and Arab children to learn together in Hebrew and Arabic. Other classes are not mixed but joint activities take place from time to time. The classes for the 1-2 year olds have a maximum of 10 children in each class. The classes for the 2-3 year olds have a maximum of 17 children in each class. The classes for the 3-, 4-, & 5-year olds, have a maximum of 25 children per class. All classes but one are located on the second floor of the main building with its own security entrance. Each class has its own fully-equipped room.
