August 30th through September 12th, 2008
The 11th Jerusalem Chamber Music Festival
JIY Auditorium

We are happy to inform you that the 11th Jerusalem Chamber Music Festival will be held this year from August 30th through September 12th, 2008. 14 chamber music concerts will be performed, as well as master classes and open lessons tutored by the festival artists, plus a particularly unique vocal recital. Among this year’s artists are some who have already performed at previous Festivals, as well as new faces who are performing at the Festival for the first time.

This year’s theme for the Festival is “the exploration of nationality in music”, and each concert will include works of a particular nation. Among the artists who will appear this year are: the singers, Stella Dufexis – mezzo soprano; Rolando Villason - tenor; Robert Holl – bass–baritone; the violinists Guy Braunstein, Mihaela Martin, Vadim Gluzman and Boris Brovtsyn; the viola players, Ori Kam and Amihai Grosz; the cellists Frans Helmerson, David Gringas and Zvi Plesser; the double bass player, Nabil Shehata; and the pianists Brigitte Engerer, Daniel Barenboim, David Kadouch, Jonatan Gillad, Asher Fisch, Kyrill Gerstein, Elena Bashkirova, Bishara Harouny and Yael Karet; the flautist, Emmanuel Pahud; the oboist Alex Klein; the clarinetist and conductor Karl Heinz Steffens; the bassoonist, Klaus Thunemann, and very many more…

Among the works to be played this year, we should especially mention the Tchaikovsky Piano Trio, the Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion by Bartok, Schubert’s Piano Fantasy for Four Hands, Verklaerte Nacht by Schonberg, Schumann’s Piano Quintet, song cycles by Schubert (Die schone Mullerin and Winterreise) and by Brahms, a special arrangement for chamber orchestra, made by Cliff Colnot for our Festival,of Pelleas und Melisande by Schoenberg, Brahms’ String Sextet, Beethoven’s Septet, Dvorak’s Piano Quintet and String Quintet, and of course many other works from the chamber music repertoire at its best.

The Festival has commissioned a new work by the American composer, Eliott Carter, who this year is celebrating his 100th birthday!!! The work is a Concerto for Flute and Chamber Orchestra that will be given its world premiere during the Festival by the flautist Emmanuel Pahud, conducted by Daniel Barenboim. This commission was made possible thanks to an exceptional cooperation between the Festival and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (that will perform its European premier) and the Boston Symphony Orchestra (that will perform the American premiere).

The entire program will be published soon, and shortly thereafter ticket sales will commence giving priority, as usual, to the Festival’s Friends.
